Producing Science and Governance for
Sustainable Development

For the purposes of scientific production and communication, Virtú Ambiental promoted the creation of IPADS, a non-profit scientific entity that, in partnership with Virtú and other partners, carries out advanced research projects, scientific dissemination, and professional training in the area of sustainable development. Although IPADS is an autonomous entity, it acts as an incubator for research and scientific communication projects that serve as a theoretical basis for Virtú Ambiental’s practical solutions. Conversely, it also draws on Virtú’s practical experience to inspire and validate its research.

IPADS currently has a consolidated portfolio of scientific publications and ongoing projects. The theoretical basis for all IPADS research and projects stems from the work “General Theory and Principle of Sustainable Development” by the President of IPADS (and director of Virtú Ambiental), Prof. Dr. Isabella Pearce, which is the result of her doctorate at the University of Coimbra and all her previous years of research since graduation. In addition to this consolidated work, IPADS has produced several other works on the theme of sustainable development, as well as research and scientific communication projects in partnership with Virtú Ambiental and other entities, which can be seen below.

General Theory and Principle of Sustainable Development: Reconciling Development, Environment, and Justice, by Isabella Pearce
“Isabella Pearce’s work is brilliant and deservedly a reference work, addressing the topic of sustainable development in a holistic, profound, and original manner, integrating the most relevant discussions on the topic already carried out by other authors from around the world, proposing new interpretations and concepts, and culminating in a true and robust General Theory of Sustainable Development.” Excerpt from the Preface by Édis Milaré.
