This project represents a milestone in the resolution of complex socio-environmental conflicts. Requested in a complementary way by the licensing agency for a mining project in the south of Piauí, the study addressed the central and most controversial issue of the project: the impact on local communities that practice beekeeping and organic agriculture.
Virtú Ambiental developed a comprehensive methodology that included extensive field visits, in-depth interviews with beekeepers in the region, and consultations with technical experts. The result was a 500-page study that not only identified the challenges, but modeled and proposed innovative solutions to a problem considered unsolvable by the local community and civil society.
The solution developed allowed the conciliation between the beekeeping activity under development (with the intention of the organic seal) and the iron mining enterprise. The proposed measures include strict control of particulate emissions, strategic relocation of apiaries and a compensation program for beekeepers, effectively transforming a negative socioeconomic impact into a positive one.
The work is in the process of being published as a scientific work, consolidating its contribution to technical knowledge in the area.
