Socioeconomic Study – Reconciliation between Mining and Organic Beekeeping
This project represents a milestone in the resolution of complex socio-environmental conflicts. Requested as a supplement by the licensing agency for a mining venture in southern Piauí, the study addressed the central and most controversial issue of the project: the impact on local communities that practice beekeeping and organic farming.
Virtú Ambiental developed a comprehensive methodology that included extensive field visits, detailed interviews with beekeepers in the region, and consultations with technical experts. The result was a 500-page study that not only identified the challenges but also modeled and proposed innovative solutions to a problem considered unsolvable by the local community and civil society.
The solution developed allowed for the reconciliation between the developing beekeeping activity (aiming for organic certification) and the iron mining venture. The proposed measures include strict control of particulate emissions, strategic relocation of apiaries, and a compensation program for beekeepers, effectively transforming a negative socioeconomic impact into a positive one.
The work is in the process of being published as a scientific paper, consolidating its contribution to technical knowledge in the field.
