PRAD Mato Grosso Residential – Mangrove Area Restoration

Virtú Ambiental developed and implemented the Degraded Area Recovery Plan (PRAD) for Residencial Mato Grosso, in São Luís, Maranhão, the largest condominium in Brazil’s “Minha Casa Minha Vida” program, with 3,200 housing units spread over approximately 50 hectares.

The project presented exceptional technical challenges due to the accidental transport of construction material and erosive processes that impacted four large mangrove areas surrounding the development. The complexity of the work involved multiple fronts of action in one of the most sensitive and legally protected ecosystems in the country.

The solutions implemented included specialized engineering to remove tons of transported material, continuous monitoring of the restoration of tide levels and planting conditions, construction of a local nursery for the production of native seedlings, and a training and hiring program for local residents to care for and transplant the seedlings. The project also includes monitoring of revegetation and tracking the return of fauna to the site, ensuring the effective recovery of the ecosystem.
